  • Type of Employment: Full-Time
  • Estimated Pay: $44.00 to $48.00 per hour based on certifications.
  • Paid Time Off: Up to 80 hours, accruing from the day of hire.
  • Sick Leave: Up to 56 hours, which starts accruing on the day of hire .
  • Federal Holidays: Eleven (11) Paid Holidays
  • Immunizations : Immunizations are Required.

Working Hours
The Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries' (CSTR) working hours would be Monday through Friday, with either the following hours:

  • 7:00 am - 4:00 pm Monday through Friday w/1-hr lunch
  • 7:30 am - 4:30 pm Monday through Friday w/1-hr lunch
  • 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday w/1-hr lunch

The Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries' hours will not exceed 40 hours/week or 80 hours/pay period. Overtime hours may be authorized with prior approval. Unpaid meal breaks (lunch) are mandatory daily. Overtime is authorized and must be approved and is defined as hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week due to critical mission needs.

Summary of Duties

The Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center is a Level 3 Trauma Center and is required to adhere to the American College of Surgeons Trauma Standards, which include uniform coding as specified according to National Trauma Data Bank and Trauma Quality Improvement Program standards. The CSTR works with physicians, administrators, researchers, and health care planners to provide support for trauma program development, ensure compliance with reporting standards, and serve as a valuable resource for trauma information with the ultimate goal of preventing and controlling traumatic injuries.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Experience with trauma registry software platforms and electronic medical record systems.
  • Certificate for completion of a trauma-specific ICD-10 course every 5 years.
  • Proof of completion of the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course.
  • Certificate from a trauma registry course offered through the American Trauma Society (ATS).
  • Certification as a Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) by the American Trauma Society.
  • Certification as a Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist (CAISS).
  • Maintains a minimum of 24 hours of trauma-related continuing education (CE) per survey cycle.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a Level I–III Trauma Center or military medical treatment facility.
  • Additional certifications such as CAISS, CSTR‑related continuing education, or registry management coursework.
  • Background in clinical care, health information management, epidemiology, or public health.

Duties and Responsibilities

Trauma Data Management & Reporting

  • Abstract, code, and enter trauma patient data into the trauma registry using ACS‑approved definitions and NTDB/TQIP standards.
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all trauma records, including demographic, clinical, procedural, and outcome data.
  • Perform routine data validation, reconciliation, and quality checks to maintain registry integrity.
  • Prepare and submit required reports to ACS, NTDB, TQIP, state trauma systems, and internal leadership.
  • Maintain compliance with all ACS verification requirements related to trauma registry operations.

Clinical & Operational Support

  • Collaborate with trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, nursing staff, and ancillary departments to clarify documentation and ensure accurate case capture.
  • Provide trauma data and analytics to support performance improvement (PI) initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, and multidisciplinary trauma committee activities.
  • Assist in identifying trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement in trauma care delivery.

Program Development & Compliance

  • Support trauma program development through data-driven insights, benchmarking, and outcome analysis.
  • Ensure adherence to ACS Trauma Standards, hospital policies, and federal and state reporting requirements.
  • Participate in trauma center verification preparation, audits, and continuous readiness activities.
  • Maintain current knowledge of trauma coding guidelines, registry best practices, and regulatory updates.

Education, Research & Injury Prevention

  • Serve as a resource for trauma-related data to physicians, administrators, researchers, and public health partners.
  • Provide data support for research initiatives, grant applications, and injury prevention programs.
  • Assist in developing educational materials and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
